Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park that covers over 814 square miles of protected natural area. It is the most visited National Park in the US – with over 9 million visitors each year. The park has an abundance of wildlife – over 200 species of birds, 66 species of mammals, 50 species of fish, 39 species of reptiles, and 43 species of amphibians – and don’t forget the large population of black bears, the unofficial mascot of the region. There are several historical attractions inside the park including Cades Cove, an area with several preserved buildings including log cabins. Ample hiking trails for all levels run through the park, and several that lead to amazing waterfalls or observation decks that look out for miles onto the mountain peaks.
There are also extensive fishing areas, overnight camping, bicycling, and water tubing all inside the park. Don’t forget to visit Sugarlands Visitors’ Center to see exhibits on wildlife, geology, and learn about the history of the park.
